          Jacques C. Beauchamp fonds

          Fonds consists of the professional papers of Jacques C. Beauchamp, a bridge engineer and later head of Structures for Public Works Canada. Fonds also includes Beauchamp’s articles and reports on bridge design, construction and appraisal plus articles and reports produced by his staff. There are files on the creation of the federal Place du Portage complex in Gatineau, Québec, 1958-1975, and federal bridges crossing the Ottawa River.

          There are numerous files on the role of Public Works Canada in overseeing the feasibility and the bidding competition for a crossing of the Northumberland Strait between Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick which resulted in the Confederation Bridge. Included is historical material from previous designs and the role of the federal government in building a crossing as well as feasibility studies by consultants and the first round of technical proposals for building a crossing.

          Fonds also contains Beauchamp’s subject files on bridge types (cable-stayed, concrete, box girder etc.). Other subject files cover construction standards, environmental assessments, seismic events etc. There are prints and slides of interprovincial bridges, the construction of Olympic facilities in Calgary and specific bridge types.

          The material is organized into six series: Personal; Public Works Canada; Northumberland Crossing Project; Bridge Subject Files; General Subject Files; and Photographs and Slides.

          The fonds consists of records that reflect the different roles that Janet played throughout her life as well as the various activities and functions she performed throughout the community. The fonds is arranged into five series and then various subseries, all of which reflect Janet’s diverse activities.

          The majority of the records are textual (i.e. minutes, reports, correspondence, published material, newspapers, etc.) although there is also a sizable photograph collection as well as some maps and plans and even artwork.           John Arnold fonds

          The fonds includes Arnold’s records as design consultant and artistic advisor for the project to build the RCAF Memorial Hall of Tribute at the National Aviation Museum (now the Canada Aviation and Space Museum). Records include proposals by artists and architects, a draft of Arnold’s report to the RCAF Memorial Fund, technical drawings, photographs, notes on meetings and other matters, and correspondence with the different actors involved in the project. The fonds is arranged mostly in the order it was received, as reflected by the annotated preliminary inventory that was added at the end of the original files. The archivist grouped some correspondence together by the name of the correspondent, as indicated in the annotations on the inventory.

          15 images rescued from the Sir James Whitney School for the Deaf in the 1980s. The images date from the early 1950s and are pasted on to card. They were used in teaching children at the school. They depict buildings in Belleville, Ontario: the Armouries; the Government Dock (printed image from a brochure); Deacon Brothers Ltd. (printed image of the Dundas Street site); postcard of Victoria Park and Belleville Harbour (taken from the City Hall tower); the Tabernacle United Church (b/w photograph); Belleville Public Works Department (b/w photograph); Belleville City Hall and Belleville City Council Chamber (2 b/w photographs); Shire Hall [demolished 1961] and Hastings County Council Chamber (2 b/w photographs); group of children standing behind Belleville Police Station, with Armouries in rear (b/w photograph); St. Thomas Church from the south (b/w photograph); Pump House (b/w photograph); Hastings County Registry Office (b/w photograph); the Baptist Church on Pinnacle Street/Victoria Avenue (b/w photograph).

          The collection also includes a colour print of 'Keep BCI in the Picture' a reproduction of 'East Side, West Side' by Eve Lucy, printed by Market High as part of the campaign BCIVS 2000, commiteeted to keeping the Belleville Collegiate Institute and Vocational School building as part of the Belleville landscape.

          The fonds contains the papers of John S. Turnbull of Belleville, Ontario. Enclosed in the first file is a description of the property of a Mr. Forrin; a notice instructing Mr. Turnbull to pay Mr. James Anderson eleven pounds, ten shillings by Mr. James Turnbull; and a description of the west side of Front Street. The second file consists of items relating to Turnbull's estate including a list of properties he owned, a list of personal effects, the last will and testament of Margaret Campbell, the first and final wills of John Turnbull, and documents pertaining to a dispute over his estate by his family after his death, there is also a map of mineral reserves in Marmora. The third file is composed of various real estate contracts, the fourth file consists of real estate deeds, while the fifth file is made up of real estate leases.

          The series contains correspondence, newsletters, photographs, scrapbooks, postcards, diagrams, clippings, bulletins, brochures, programs, song sheets, posters, publications, dramatic scripts, and reports. This material is related to the history of the third Mother House of the Sisters of St. Joseph in London, which was called Mount St. Joseph. There is information about the construction of the building and detailed information about its special features and decoration, including the Immaculate Conception Chapel, and its grounds, particularly the Grotto. The records also relate to planning the construction of, and move to, the Sisters’ residence in 2007, and the sale of the Mount St. Joseph building and property. There are records which reflect communal life in the convent, including the various organized groups, events, and dramatic and musical entertainment, and menus, meal planning, and recipes. The series contains records related to men religious who served at the Mother House, and other Diocesan correspondence. Information about both Fatima Hall and Ignatia Hall can be found, including the various uses of space in these buildings.
