Administrative history
Brampton Meals on Wheels (BMOW) delivers fresh and frozen nutritious meals to clients in need within the City of Brampton.
Meals on Wheels originated in Great Britain during the Blitz; the destruction of so many homes resulted in the need for a roving food distribution service (overseen by the Women’s Volunteer Service for Civil Defence). Post-war home delivery started in Hertfordshire, England, in 1947.
In the spring of 1963 Brampton was the first recorded city in Canada to deliver meals to seniors in need. The program was supported by the local Soroptimist Club until 1973, at which time the Peel Memorial Hospital Auxiliary took over. In September 1974 funding from the City of Brampton was allocated to pay for office space and a co-ordinator, thus making BMOW an official non-profit organization. In 1975 BMOW came under the wing of the Region of Peel, moving into offices at Peel Manor (where it still resides today). BMOW was incorporated on June 6, 1985.
The number of meal deliveries has grown over the years, from 1,484 in 1975 to over 40,000 in 2010.
