Administrative history
James Roy founded the Blyth Summer Festival in the Spring of 1975 with the assistance of a Board of Directors made up of local residents and funding from the Ontario Arts Council. The professional summer theatre took residence in the Blyth Memorial Hall. The building was built in the 1920's to commemorate those who fought in World War I and barely escaped demolition in the 1960's had it not been for a handful of concerned citizens and government funding. The first season plays included "The Mousetrap" and "Mostly in Clover". The four-hundred seat theatre was sold out for the theatre's opening night performance, "Mostly in Clover". The success of this Canadian play would impact the theatre's future presentations and led to an exclusively Canadian Mandate. As as result, the Blyth Summer Festival has premiered many Canadian plays.
