    Biographical history

Albert Thornbrough was born in Kansas in 1912. He graduated in agricultural economics at Kansas State College, and went on to study economics at Harvard University. He joined Harry Ferguson Inc., Detroit, in 1946 and rose to Vice President Director. Following an amalgamation he became Executive Vice President of Massey-Harris-Ferguson Ltd., Toronto, in 1955; became Director of Massey Ferguson Limited in 1956; appointed President in late 1956, Chief Executive Officer 1965, and Deputy Chairman of the Massey-Ferguson board in 1978. He retired in April 1979 to Florida, where he lived until his death after a sudden illness in 2004. In addition to his work for Massey-Ferguson, Thornbrough became an inaugural member of the University of Guelph’s Board of Governors in 1964, serving as the board’s vice-chair for a number of years. He also co-chaired the University's development fund in the early 1970s and served as chair of the finance committee. In June 1973, the University formally recognized his contributions with the dedication of a new engineering building in his name.
