    Biographical history

    Alan James was a research professor of international relations at Keele University, UK and is a published author on peacekeeping. Born in 1933 in Newport, Monmouthshire, South Wales, he was educated in London. He graduated with a B.Sc in Economics, majoring in International Relations, from the London School of Economics with first class honors in 1954. James was a Professor of International Relations at Keele University in Keele, Staffordshire, England from 1974 to 1990 and a Research Professor from 1990 to 1998. As a young university professor, James became interested in the politics of international organizations and thus, in peacekeeping. After his first book in 1969, The Politics of Peacekeeping, his interest in peacekeeping was maintained which led to future writings. He has also held the positions of Rockefeller Research Fellow at Columbia University in New York, Visiting Professor at the University of Ife, in Nigeria, and at Jawaharal Nehru University in New Delhi. A former Chairman of the British International Studies Association, James has also been the Chair of the International Law Section of the (US - based) International Studies Association and guest Professor at Japan's National Institute for Defense Studies. He is a published author having written numerous journal articles, book chapters, newspaper articles, and book reviews. James' books include The Politics of Peacekeeping (1969), Sovereign Statehood: The Basis of International Society (1986), Peacekeeping in International Politics (1990) and Britain and The Congo Crisis, 1960-1963 (1996). Books edited by James include The Basis of International Order (1973), States in a Changing World (1993), A Dictionary of Diplomacy (with G.R. Berridge in 2001), and Keeping the Peace in the Cyprus Crisis of 1963-1964 (2002). In connection with his research, James has also paid field visits to ten peacekeeping operations. James married Val Hancox in 1956 and had six children. He remarried in 1981 to Professor Lorna Lloyd and they currently reside in Congleton, Cheshire, England.

    Scope and content

    Fonds consists of a variety of records relating to peacekeeping and collected by Alan James for research as well as teaching purposes. A large number of Alan James’ publications, generally journal articles from 1957 to 1998, United Nations (UN) and NATO records, as well as information on the Falkland Island’s War are contained in the series. Some of Alan James peacekeeping records are arranged generally, or chronologically, but the majority of records, consisting of United Nations (U.N.) records and newspaper clippings relating to peacekeeping, are arranged according to the country. These records concern peacekeeping in forty-three countries and are arranged into the following 25 series:

    Immediate source of acquisition

    Series 1-23 were received 11 April 2005 from the Pearson Peacekeeping Centre in Clemontsport, Nova Scotia. The records were previously donated to the Pearson Peacekeeping Centre by Alan James in 1998 and in 2002. Series 24 was received 4 January 2006, and series 25 was received 15 February 2006 from Alan James at Cheschire, England.
