Bartlett, Samuel, 1863-1937

Samuel T. Bartlett was a United Church minister, formerly Methodist. He was born in the island of Jersey on March 11, 1863 and moved to Canada at the age of nine years. At 17, he entered Methodist ministry and served pastorates in Ontario until he was appointed Associate Secretary of Sunday School and Epworth League Board in 1906, becoming General Secretary in 1909. In 1921 he started work with the Department of Art Photography at the Methodist Book and Publishing House. Rev. Bartlett was superannuated in 1925 and died on December 17, 1937.

Cornelius John L. Bates (1877-1964), was a missionary and educator in Japan. He was born at L'Orignal, Ontario in 1877. He was educated at Queen's University, McGill University and at the Wesleyan Theological College in Montreal. After a brief pastorate at Blind River, Ontario, Rev. Bates went to Japan as a missionary in 1902 and did evangelistic work. In 1910 he was appointed Professor at Kwansei Gakuin University. In 1920 he was made President, and presided over its great expansion. In 1941, Rev. Bates returned to Canada, supplying at Knox- Metropolitan United Church in Regina and assisting at Royal York United Church in Toronto. He retired in 1946. In 1959, he visited Japan and had an audience with Emperor Hirohito. He died in 1964.

George Frederick Bates was a United Church minister in Ontario. He was ordained in London Conference in 1967. He served charges in Shallow Lake, Schomberg, Mattawa and North Bay.

Bathurst Street United Church in Toronto was established in 1925; formerly Bathurst Street Methodist Church. It was located at 736 Bathurst Street, at the corner of Lennox Street, just south of Bloor Street West. Since ca.1985, the congregation no longer uses the Bathurst Street building but rather holds its services in the Trinity-St. Paul's United Church building at 427 Bloor Street West.

Bathurst Street Methodist Church was established in 1884 upon the union of Bathurst Street Primitive Methodist Church and Seaton Village Methodist (formerly Wesleyan Methodist) Church (the area north and west of the intersection of Bathurst Street and Bloor Street West was known as Seaton Village at that time). The Primitive Methodist Church was located at the intersection of Bathurst and Lennox Street, just south of Bloor; the Seaton Village Church was located at what is now 643 Markham Street, just north and west of Bathurst and Bloor. After Methodist union in 1884, the Seaton Village building was moved to the site of the Primitive Methodist building at Bathurst and Lennox, and the two buildings were attached. A new church building was dedicated in 1888, with the original building used as a Sunday School until 1910, at which time it was demolished and replaced by another Sunday School building.

Emma Baylis was a Congregationalist missionary. She worked among Labrador fishermen ca. 1869 and among the Aboriginal People at Spanish River, Ontario ( near the present-day community of Espanola) during the summers from at least 1872 to 1885. At Spanish River, she taught a day school for children, organized reading classes for women, led Sunday meetings and taught Sunday School and Bible classes.

Beach United Church was established in July 2007 with the amalgamation of Bellefair United Church and Kew Beach United Church. It is located at 140 Wineva Avenue. It is still an active congregation of the United Church of Canada.

Bellefair United Church was established in 1925; formerly Bellefair Methodist Church. It was located at 2 Bellefair Avenue, on the corner of Bellefair and Queen Street East, in the Beach area of Toronto, just north of Kew Gardens. It closed in 2007.

Kew Beach United Church was established in 1925; formerly Presbyterian. The church changed its name to Beach United Church in 2007 when it amalgamated with Bellefair United Church.

Samuel Milton Beach (1880-1953) was a Methodist/United Church minister in Ontario. He was born at Kemptville, Ontario, was married to Mildred May Foster, and farmed for several years, before being ordained in 1914. He served charges in northern Ontario, Port Carling, Barrie and Toronto.

Bedford Park United Church was established in 1925; formerly Presbyterian. It was located at 100 Ranleigh Avenue. In 2005, the church began to consider redeveloping its property for mixed use housing and community space, and in 2012, the church building was demolished. The congregation began to worship in rented space at Eglinton St. George's United Church at 35 Lytton Blvd. The redevelopment became unfeasible and the Ranleigh Avenue property was sold. The congregation of Bedford Park United Church is now closed.

Bedford Park Presbyterian Church began holding services in private homes as early as 1913. In 1921, the congregation built a church at Ranleigh Avenue, near Yonge and Lawrence. It joined the United Church of Canada in 1925.

William C. Beer (1840-1916) was a Methodist minister in Ontario. He was born in Devonshire, England, and at fifteen years of age came to Canada and settled in Solina, near Bowmanville. He married Ann Bodkin of Delaware in 1870. He was received on trial in the Bible Christian Church began in 1865, achieved full connexion 1879 and was superannuated to the London Conference in 1901. In between, he served many charges in the Bay of Quinte and London Conferences.

Harold James Bell, (1890-1969), was a United Church minister. He was born in Beaverton, Ontario in 1890. He received his M.A. from University College, University of Toronto and his B.D. from Victoria University. He was ordained in 1925 and served several churches before retirement in 1958. He died in 1969.

Bell, John Wesley, 1847-1929

John Wesley Bell, (1847-1929) was a minister and temperance worker in Western Canada. He was born in the Bay of Quinte area of Ontario in 1847. He was received on trial for the ministry of the Wesleyan Methodist Church in 1870. A graduate of Victoria University (B.D.), he was ordained by the Toronto Conference of the Methodist Church of Canada in 1877 and started a lengthy career of church and temperance work in Western Canada and the United States. In 1901 he resigned from the Methodist ministry and devoted most of his time to temperance work. He returned to the ministry in 1915. He died 1929 July 6. His wife, a medical doctor, survived him, as did his daughter.

Belmont, Harrietsville - Mossley Pastoral Charge, also known as Belmont Pastoral Charge, was formed ca. 1970 when Harrietsville and Mossley churches left Avon Pastoral Charge to join Belmont Pastoral Charge. Belmont Pastoral Charge was formed in 1925 and originally included Belmont, Victoria, and Salem. Following the closures of both Victoria and Salem in the 1940s, Belmont amalgamated with Nilestown and Gore Pastoral Charge to form a three-point charge ca. 1950. The charge was known as Belmont, Nilestown and Gore Pastoral Charge as well as Belmont Pastoral Charge. The charge again became a single-point charge with the closure of Gore (ca. 1957) and Nilestown (ca. 1968).

Belmont United Church was established in 1925, formerly Methodist. The Belmont Methodist Circuit was established ca. 1853 and included: Brath's, Traver's, Plymouth, Purdy's, Manning's, Wesley, and Plaxton's (Mossley). The Belmont church was built in 1856. The church joined the United Church of Canada in 1925 and formed part of Belmont Pastoral Charge. It is still an active congregation of the United Church.

Harrietsville - Mossley United Church was formed in 1978, when Mossley United Church and Harrietsville United Church amalgamated.It is still an active congregation of the United Church of Canada.

Harrietsville United Church was established in 1925, formerly Methodist. The Methodist Church in Harrietsville was established ca. 1862. A second church was built in 1896. The church joined the United Church of Canada in 1925 and formed part of Avon Pastoral Charge until ca. 1970 when it moved to Belmont Pastoral Charge. It amalgamated with Mossley in 1978 to form Harrrietsville - Mossley United Church.

Mossley United Church was established in 1925, formerly Methodist. The Methodist Church in Mossley was established ca. 1860 with the building of a church on the third Concession, half a mile east of Mossley's Corners. A new church was constructed in 1911. The church joined the United Church of Canada in 1925 and formed part of Avon Pastoral Charge until ca. 1970 when it moved to Belmont Pastoral Charge. It amalgamated with Harrietsville in 1978 to form Harrrietsville - Mossley United Church.

Nilestown United Church was established in 1925, formerly Methodist. Methodist services began in Nilestown in 1856. it joined the United Church of Canada in 1925. Originally it formed part of a pastoral charge with Grace United Church in London. It then became its own charge with Gore United Church ca. 1933. It closed in 1969. Much of the congregation moved to Belmont.

Melvyn Matthew Bennett (1868-1939) was a minister of the Methodist Church and later of The United Church of Canada. He was born in Sebringville, Ontario in 1868. He obtained his B.A. degree from Wesley College, Winnipeg in 1893. After a couple of years teaching, he returned to Wesley College and Victoria College. He was ordained in 1898. He was posted to the Dryden Mission in Northern Ontario. In 1899, he married Kathleen Cooper. He preached at various circuits in Saskatchewan, returning after 1925 to Ontario. Rev. Bennett retired in 1927 and died in 1939.

Berkeley Street United Church, at the corners of Queen Street East and Berkeley Street, was established in 1925, formerly Methodist. In 1955 it amalgamated with Regent Park United Church in the Regent Park building, and retained that name. The Berkeley church building became Berkeley Studios, the United Church of Canada's media centre until the studio moved to United Church of Canada General Council Office at 3250 Bloor Street West in Toronto in 1995.
