        General note

During the summer of 1942, Rev. Father Eugene Mongeau of Sacred Heart College came up with the idea of creating a recreation centre for the children in the area. The St. John the Baptist Society (aka St. Jean-Baptiste Society or St. Jean Baptiste Society) was asked for help and they became the main sponsor of the program.

"The first playground was organized in 1943, with only a few playthings obtained for the campus." A "booth was erected containing a telephone, loud speaker, gramophone and candy store and various apparatus for amusement was erected on the grounds." About 750 children were registered on its opening day on July 2, 1943 and 1,100 were registered by the end of the first week. The project cost about $1,500 the first year with $200 provided by the municipality and the rest by the St. John the Baptist Society, other associations and private individuals. The names, ages, and personal dates of the children were recorded and a badge with an assigned number was given to each child to wear while at the playground. "Children were divided into groups according to age and sex and each group had its own Captain who was usually a Boy Scout or a Girl Guide. Each group was given a daily program of games to execute. The winners of various games received coupons with which they could obtain a free lunch or other refreshments. Two Girl Guides with first aid experience were in attendance at all times and the St. Jean Baptiste Society took a Group Insurance Policy of $5000.00 in case of injuries. Fortunately no accidents occurred during the Summer. A swimming pool was erected and through the generosity of Mr. J. A. Laberge was completely constructed in cement. On five days a week the play ground was opened till nine o'clock." To stop the sand buildup in the 125 x 70 feet pool, a new cement floor was added the first year.

By 1946, "some 1,500 children registered at Sacred Heart College to attend recreation and enjoy the facilities of the playground." By that time, the playground included "14 swings, 14 seesaws, two giant slides, two merry-go-rounds, an ocean wave, two mammoth playground slides and a water slide." There were also 10 pony swings, 24 travelling rings, "a horizontal ladder and one full gymnastic outfit."

On May 12, 1953, the City of Sudbury Board of Control, by Motion No. 9, recommended that the "Recreation Budget be increased to $900.00 to allow for paying services of Supervisors at this Playground." With this motion, the Sudbury Recreation Committee became responsible for the "leadership and programming of the playground... The move was made with the concurrence of the society."

In 1956, the cost of the water supplied to the "Sacred Heart Swimming Pool was brought up at a meeting of the Fire, Water & Light Committee." The water was paid for by the municipal waterworks operating expenses "for some years." The mater was discussed with the Recreation Committee and the Recreation Committee felt "that some special consideration should be given since it will cost a great deal of money for the water in these two pools and since the Committee had never never [sic] had to pay for the water in the swimming pool before. A letter was to be sent to Council asking for consideration in this matter and asking that the Committee be not charged too much." On October 31, 1956, motion 56-434 was passed by council that "in view of the public service rendered by the swimming pool at Sacred Heart College that no charge be made to the College for the water used in this connection."

Sometime between May 1953 and June 1958, the playground property was sold and the playground, while physically still present in 1958, was not under "city or service club jurisdiction."
