General note
John Stone was from Del Rio, Texas and was visiting Canada when World War II broke out in September 1939. Stone and six friends decided to join the Toronto Scottish Regiment on September 3, 1939. He was deployed, but was sent back to Canada after two years overseas due to shock. Upon his return to Canada, Stone was discharged. After a short period of recuperation he joined the Tank Corps in Toronto, Ontario and in April 1942 was still in training.
John Stone's photograph was taken for the Sudbury Star when he traveled through the region on his way to Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, United States of America to visit a friend.
