General note
Wilfred Fortier was born in Ottawa, Ontario and moved to Sudbury, Ontario with his parents at the age of 15. Before commencing military training with the Canadian Army on January 8, 1941, he worked at the Dominion Bridge Company in Copper Cliff, Ontario and the Delongchamp Cartage Company. At the time of the article, Fortier had applied to be an Ordinary Seaman with the Royal Canadian Navy but had not yet been notified if he was accepted or not.
