Institutionele geschiedenis

1 Combat Engineer Regiment (CER) is the combat engineer unit that supports 1 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group in Western Canada. Its headquarters is located at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Edmonton. The regiment was originally established on 4 May 1951 in response to the increasing demands of Canada’s commitments both in the North American Treaty Organisation (NATO) and the ongoing Korean War. It was originally designated the 58th Independent Field Squadron. At this time the unit was based out of Hameln, Germany. On 16 October 1953 it was renamed the 3rd Field Squadron. December 1953 saw the squadron transferred to CFB Chilliwack. It later deployed to postwar Korea in 1954-1955. On 30 April 1958, 3rd Field Squadron became independent and was renamed 3 Field Squadron and moved to Calgary. The unit was part of the process of experimental testing for the Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus (SCUBA) as well as its eventual operational implementation. In 1975, the squadron was renamed 3 Field Engineer Squadron until its eventual re-designation as 1 CER in 1977. Since 1996, 1 CER has been housed at CFB Edmonton.

Geschiedenis beheer

Document was held by British War Diaries but returned to Canada with other documents from the transition of the United Nations Protection Force (UNPROFOR) to the Implementation Force (IFOR). As the document was unclassified, it was decided that there was no need for it to be stored with war diaries. It was passed to the DHH Archives on 7 August 2012.

Bereik en inhoud

Fonds consists of document entitled “UNPROFOR Engineer Mine Guide.” It is an early manual prepared by 1 Combat Engineer Regiment (1 CER) for identifying and clearing landmines in Yugoslavia. The manual was prepared in 1992 when 1 CER served with the United Nations Protection Force (UNPROFOR). It includes black and white diagrams and illustrations for numerous types of mine anatomy, as well as several de-mining and explosive laying techniques.
