Administrative history
No. 1 Canadian War Crimes Investigation Unit was established on 4 June 1945 under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel B.J.S. Macdonald to continue the work of the SHAEF (Supreme Headquarters, Allied Expeditionary Forces) Court. Two detachments were established: the North West Europe Detachment at Bad Salzflen, Germany and the U.K. Detachment at Canadian Army Headquarters, London, England. Canadian personnel from the SHAEF Courts were transferred to the new Canadian Unit whose mandate was to investigate all reports of war crimes affecting any member of the Canadian forces. The unit remained active until its disbandment 31 May 1946.
