Institutionele geschiedenis
The 1 Canadian Division Intelligence Company (1 Cdn Div Int Coy) was established in 1989 when the Canadian government, in consultation with its NATO allies, decided to consolidate the Canadian Army's commitment to NATO in Central Europe. The Company's role was to provide combat intelligence support to the 1st Canadian Division Headquarters (1 Cdn Div HQ). Its first deployments were during the Oka crisis on Operation FEATHER, where an infantry battalion was deployed to Akwesasne to control armed violence that had broken out amongst Mohawk factions, and Operation SALON, which occurred later that year when the entire 5 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group was deployed south of Montreal to contain armed insurrectionists at Oka and Châteauguay. The company was later awarded a Chief of Defence Commendation for these missions. The unit had a peacetime establishment of 3 officers and 23 non-commissioned members, and was the only regular force field deployable intelligence unit in the Canadian Forces. It remains a formed army unit, however no personnel has been assigned to it since 2000 due to an amalgamation with 1 Cdn Div HQ, 1 Canadian Division Headquarters and Signal Regiment, and 79 Communication Regiment to form the Canadian Forces Joint Operations Group.
Geschiedenis beheer
Bereik en inhoud
Fonds consists of 16 folders containing 89 files in total, a few of which are in two parts. Files deal with the organization, methods of operation and approach of the 1 Canadian Division Intelligence Company and the 5 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group during the Oka crisis. Fonds contains post-operation reports, conference minutes and operation instructions for Operation Salon. A wide range of intelligence collected from Kahnawake, Oka and the Warrior Society in the early 1990s is also included. It is comprised of reconnaissance (the geography of the area, layout of buildings and other structures, and resources available to the Warriors to resist the military) and the personalities, aims and activities of the influential members of the Mohawk community, as well as some non-natives who took the Warrior side. Fonds also contains a book on traditional Native Teachings from 1984, the 1916 Constitution of the Iroquois, and background information regarding plans, proposals, RCMP logs and other memoranda, as well as legal and quasi-legal documents from the Six Nations, the Assembly of First Nations and the Akwesasne Mohawk Nation in the 1780s.

Algemene aantekening
The files arrived with a considerable amount of organization and their original order and file names have been kept. However, in a few places some correspondence appears out of sequence, the first volume of a block of material frequently appearing after the second, and so forth. Some of these problems are noted in the finding aid.
